Mass goers who are hard of hearing have 2 -options with our existing sound system:
1. If you have a hearing aid with a ‘tele coil’ (also referred to as a ‘t-switch’ or a ‘t-coil’), you can ‘manually’ switch it from ‘M’ (for receiving airborne sound via the microphone in the hearing aid) to ‘T’ (for T-coil). The microphone in the hearing aid will shut off entirely and the t-coil (a wire coil in the hearing aid which serves as an antenna) will pick up only the magnetic signals coming from the inductive –floor-loop under the carpet. Because the microphone is shut off, this eliminates ‘feedback whistling’ and reduces background noise.
A t-coil is very small and can fit in all but the tiniest analog and digital hearing aids and cochlear implants. If you have a non-tele coil equipped hearing aid, ask your audiologist if it can be retrofitted with a t-coil or if the t-coil can be activated. If your hearing aid has an ‘auto coil’, it may require a ‘manual’ override switch to physically switch it into t-coil mode (because the floor-loop magnetic field may not be strong enough to ‘Flip’ the magnetic switch.) If you have an ‘acoustic’ t-coil, it may not work with the floor-loop since there is no actual ‘wire’ coil to pick up the magnetic signal.If you tell your audiologist that you want your hearing aid to work with an ‘inductive-floor-loop’ system, they should be able to assist you.
2. Headphones attached to a small receiver (about the size of a deck of cards…and fitted with a t-coil) are available to Mass goers without t-coil equipped hearing aids.
